I have in my possession the ultimate retro gaming rig

Postby WW_III_ANGRY » Wed Feb 16, 2022 9:50 pm

So, I got a Raspberry Pi 4 with a 2 TB harddrive that is loaded with over 13,000 games. I have nearly every NES game ever (so far I see I'm missing the first Top Gun and Deja Vu), but other than that, I don't know what I'm missing that was made for the NES. I also have almost every NES game, every Sega game, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Sega CD 32, I even have about 20 games that were made for the Famicon, all the atari games from like 4 different Atari systems, coleco vision, nearly the complete library for N64, Dreamcast, Playstation 1, Neo Geo, Turbo Graphix 16, Gameboy, PSP, Gameboy Advanced. I have over 13,000 games that I'm able to play, with an extremely smooth menu system that allows me to pick games by console, by "type" - All Final Fantasy Games on all consoles, all Donkey Kong Games on all Consoles, etc.

I didn't realize it was possible until a week ago. I was over here looking to see if I can buy a used dreamcast just to play a game I used to play as a kid, now I have nearly every single game and more than I could ever play at my disposal, hooked up to a TV with 2 wireless remotes that control it. I can exit a game I'm playing from my remote and go to the menu system and pick another game in seconds. Its absolutely amazing. Now I'm thinking of maybe making it a stand up arcade game with the cabinet and all, but right now its hooked up to my TV as any other console would be. Its unbelievable, I'm playing games from my childhood that I never thought I'd play again and its all offline. I don't need an internet connection to play as its all loaded my harddrive, and it runs perfectly. In fact, it runs way better than my old NES which is 30+ years old.

I’m jealous.

These games should be public domain though since they don’t make/distribute them anymore.

Do you have hacks available?

Final Fantasy is really boring without fast forward (for example)

I mean when I beat it originally the year it came out, it was fun.

As an adult though. I don’t want to spend 3 minutes in a fight that only gives me 2 experience points.

Grinding gets old.

I don't know what you mean by do I have hacks available. But if you're asking, the games ARE available. It takes some effort from what I can tell but I don't need to download any games since they came preloaded on my hard drive. You can google raspberry pi retro gaming rig and find out how to do it yourself. There's youtube videos on it. Is it easy? No probably not, but I would say its definitely worth it. I would attempt to do this had I not been able to get it from a buddy at my work. If you are interested in more, I can help.

Yup, I got every game for NES except the first Top Gun from what I can see. I might be missing others.. But I used to Own Mike Tysons punch out so I got the code to him memorized, 0007-373-5963. I also have the regular punch out too, wihtout Mike Tyson. Same game, just the final guy isn't Mike anymore, its someone else. I played it the other day for the first time in years, got up to the Great TIger and lost. I haven't lost to him since I first started playing so obviously I was real rusty. Plus I forgot how to KO King Hippo, he messed me up too.

I've been playing a season of Tecmo Super Bowl as the Detroit Lions (yeah they suck but Barry Sanders is awesome). Plus I played some game from Japan that had Hitler in the title. Weird shit. Then there's this Asian game called Sexy Parodius or something like that and its totally child like, weird title. Those Asians are way different than us it seems. Been playing RC Pro AM (trying to beat it, never have), Castlevania II, Mortal Kombat 4, Street Fighter II, God of War, and some Super Mario land for SNES. Other than that, I tried out some old childhood favorites like Maniac Mansion for NES, Desert Commander for NES, Sim City for SNES and Playstation... The library is just amazing on this thing.

Dude. Castlevania 3. Is awesome. It’s on the Super Nintendo ... try it.

Castlevania 2 is simons quest. It’s on regular Nintendo. I know that game by heart.

I’ll tell you a funny story about Nintendo games when you’d rent them from video stores...

I’d beat them really fast and bring it back and say the cartridge doesn’t work and get all of them for free.

I had this one really funny time where I called the Nintendo hotline and I was further in the game than they were... they were asking ME questions!!

The call was free because of it.

I'll give it a shot. I do know Castlevania II and beat it a few times - love the morning star.

Yeah! I had the first issue of Nintendo Power as well...

One of its features was Zelda.

I’m going to brag a little here ...

I beat all the final fantasies and dragon warriors without calling or tutorials or advice.

Dragon warrior 1? My first time?

I beat at level 17. Yah, I’m bragging. Sorry.

Dragon Warrior III is ridiculous. I bought it used and the level was maxed out on the saved game that came with it and I still couldn't beat it. I don't know if I'm gonna play that one again, that will take over 100 hours to beat I think.

At max level and equipment hacks with no enemy confrontations except the boss... it’d take you about 20 minutes to beat.

That’s including the fast forward hack and the airship hack ... sorry

No idea bout that. But I'm starting from scratch if I play again, as I don't have any saved games for it on my retro rig.

It’s all about your mood. Sometimes you want to beat games like that in 20 mins and sometimes your mood is to play the full hundred hours.

I’ll give you one of my favorite recommendations for an NES RPG... Destiny of an Emperor.

I still enjoy playing and beating that game to this day.

What you might want to do is switch to a different virtual machine for your roms so that you can save.

I'll see if I have Destiny of an Emperor, never heard of it. But I can save on my machine actually. Its just when I had Dragon Warrior III it was a used console game, I don't have it anymore.

I just have to be perfectly honest man.

Some of the best art ever created by people is video games. Especially the older ones. That was the ‘golden age’

Interesting, I never really looked at it that way. I felt often the hardware limited the ability to make the art the designer wanted, but then again, maybe not either. Maybe it was something to behold regardless. I mean, really it was a medium just like a canvas would be, or water colors, or colored pencils. They did a damn good job with what they could. The music even, on 8 bit, is something to behold. Thanks! I'm going to start appreciating it more when I replay these old games.
